    Obsessions
I have a tendency to be quite OCD when it comes to my computers. This is why I can end up installing and re-installing Windows (or whatever the OS happens to be) over and over and over again until I get everything JUST SO.

So you may be able to imagine my bemusement when I finally, after months and months of putting it off, got around to re-partitioning my hard drive, got all my programs re-installed, and restored all my data. Only to find out that everything barely fits with no room for expansion.

I think I'm going to need to invest in a bigger hard drive. :P

    Another summer come and gone...
I know there are still a few weeks left before Labor Day (the unofficial end of summer), and a few more weeks beyond that until the official end of summer; but the way my schedule works out, I'm pretty much at the end of my summer already.

I just got back on Sunday from visiting my relatives in South Korea, so I'm still experiencing extreme jet lag (woke up this morning at just before 3AM). But this meant I've had plenty of time to make myself both breakfast (grilled cheese sandwich) and a sack lunch to take to work (basically, just frying up some frozen tonkatsu that my wife prepared for me before leaving with Elise for Korea).

This was the family's first trip back to Korea since Soojung and I got married a little over 2 1/2 years ago. Between that and the fact that my father-in-law had yet to see Elise in-person (and it'd been about a year since my mother-in-law had been here for Elise's birth), Soojung and the baby went over before I did to give them more time with the baby; and they're staying there for almost two full months (whereas I was only there for just under one).

When we first planned this trip out, I thought that one month would be plenty of time for me to do all the things I needed to do while in Korea. And, while we did cross a lot of items off the to-do list, there were a few things (like a small family trip within Korea) that didn't get done.

That said, I'm glad to be back in the U.S. because the humidity in Korea this summer turned the heat from merely oppressive to unbearable. Just a few minutes standing still outside left me looking like I'd been doing aerobics for an hour or two. And led to my shirts gaining rings of salt if I went inside and let them dry out. Of course, my wife informs me that, as soon as I got on that plane from Incheon to New York, the weather turned much nicer and cooler. Figures. :p

Anyways, it looks like I'm spending way too much time working on this entry and not enough on getting ready for work. So I'm gonna have to come back to this later....

Approaching the end of Year One
It's less than seven days now before Elise turns one. I never imagined being a dad would be so, well, hard. That said, I think we've been pretty lucky on the health front. When she was only a few months old, we ended up giving her some stomach meds to treat some suspected acid reflux that might have been irritating her esophagus and causing her to cry all the time (aka the dreaded colic). (I guess in some babies, it can take some time for the muscle controlling passage from the esophagus to the stomach to develop fully.) We had quite a scare when she went from not putting anything into her own mouth one day to putting a coin in her mouth which made her start throwing up and retching on the next day. Oh, and she's fallen many times, a few times on her head.

But she's growing up really well, though the wife sometimes bugs me about the fact that Elise hasn't started walking yet. But these days, between crawling around like a madman and playing with mom and dad, she seems awfully mature at times. While the first six months passed by so slowly, it seems these last six have passed so much faster.

And while I haven't been uploading pictures to Picasa at all (which has probably been a boon to anyone who hates parents who just go on and on about their kids), that doesn't mean we don't have pictures. It's just that they're all sitting on the hard drive of the computer at home, waiting for a power surge or hard drive failure to wipe them all out. Okay, that's not strictly true. About half of the pics have been backed up to DVD, so we wouldn't exactly lose all of them.

As for this LiveJournal, I've contemplated off-and-on about what I want to do with this space. I spend most of my Internet time (what little of it that I have these days) on Facebook, so I'm not sure how I would go about writing more long-form stuff for here. Maybe it's time I checked out blogging software so I could just write stuff whenever and then upload it whenever?

It's probably a good thing that I haven't lost my desire to write things here (though you wouldn't know it from how sparsely I update), but I'm not exactly sure what I should write about. I think that just writing about the kid would be lame. On the other hand, if I just wrote about the other things in my life, most of that stuff would be very short and very random. Mostly musings on things I hear on news radio while I'm commuting to and from work.

Oh well. I guess that's it for now, then.

    More pictures
    Not much new to report.

The mom and I (and the mother-in-law) are all suffering from a lack of sleep.
The baby is growing well. (Though I don't think she's hit 8 lbs. yet.)

And there are 8 more pictures up on Picasa.

    It's a girl!
o/~ It's a wonderful day in the neighborhood.
A wonderful day for a daughter; won't you be mine? o/~

Okay, so we've known it would be a girl for months now and I'm probably all loopy as hell from a distinct lack of sleep last night; but driving home from the hospital, the weather was so damn beautiful that Mr. Rogers Neighborhood just popped into my mind out of nowhere. (o/~ Blue, blue skies. Blue, blue skies I see. o/~)

Anyways, Elise Seojin Moon was born this morning at 6:19AM. She and her mom are both doing well. They'll probably end up coming home on Monday.

And now, it's off to bed for some rest, before we head back to the hospital to check in on mother and daughter.

    It has begun!
The contractions have started. The baby is on its way. Now, whether she'll be born later today or early tomorrow is still to be seen. Either way, the wife talked to our OB/GYN and said that there's no need to rush home from work yet. (Hence, why I'm here typing this post instead of rushing to the hospital.)

    Happy b-day!!!
Okay, looks like I was wrong in my last post. The 13th was in the middle of the 37th week, and today is part of the 39th week. In any case, the baby is due pretty much any day now. But probably not for a few days since the baby hasn't finished descending yet.

But enough about the baby. I just wanted to say happy b-day to [info]syksushi. Guess what, man? You're about to become an unofficial uncle. ;)

    Live long and prosper
Seeing as how there are now only 17 days left until our baby is due, I guess that makes this, uh, the end of the 38th week of pregnancy? That said, things haven't really changed much since we got married. I guess all the changes don't really start happening until AFTER the baby is born?

Anyways, I was minding my own business, driving down the freeway coming home from work tonight, when some dude riding in a Passat wagon flashed me the Vulcan "Live long and prosper" sign from Star Trek.

So, of course, I flashed him one back. :D

Beware the grandma patrol Part 2
First of all, let me thank everyone who've waited patiently for me to finish this story. As you would reasonably expect, things got pretty busy after I got married, what with visits from the in-laws, visits to the parents in Michigan, work, and sundry other things related to surviving while the economy is imploding around you. At the same time, it really is a bit much that, in the time that's passed since I posted part 1 of this story, we've already had our one-year anniversary and have a kid on the way (a daughter). My bad.

And yet, the passage of time does mean that I can now fill in some details of the story from Soojung's point of view, since we've talked a few times about how it is we ended up together. That said, for the most part, this is going to be my story told from my side of things.

So once again, I start off with a quote. This time, not a Fortune Cookie fortune but a verse from the Bible:

"Where there is no counsel, the people fall; But in the multitude of counselors there is safety."

    New cell phone get!
That's right. After years and years and years of use, I'm finally dumping my Toshiba VM4050 (aka Audiovox CDM9950SP) for a new phone. And I'm getting ... a RZR!!!

Okay, so I'm only a few years late to that party. :p

Anyways, the reason for the new phone after having been with Sprint for ages and ages is that I'm finally switching to another carrier. And because my brother got an iPhone earlier this year, and because the whole family is on a single plan, and because for some stupid reason (read: AT&T's crappy billing system) AT&T can NOT handle a family plan where the phones have different area codes whereas Sprint had no such problems, I'm not porting my number over.

What does this mean? It means I'm not just getting a new (old) phone, I'm also getting a new (old) number. I am NOT, however, getting my old 248 number back. (Back in the days when I had a Motorola StarTac. Those were the days.) But I AM going back to that area code. So the new numbah iz:

    too-for-ate sicks-twee-tree far-tube-oh-tool

Oh, and on a side note, if that's too hard for you to figure out, you're no longer my friend.

Just kidding. Though it does mean you're not going to be able to call me on my cell phone any more. ;)

    Not Part 2 (unfortunately)
While I was hoping to have part 2 (the final part) up before I left, it looks like it's not going to make it up in time. (Seeing as how I leave tomorrow at 10AM, and I haven't even STARTED packing yet.)

There's a good chance we'll have internet access during the honeymoon (at the hotels); but even if we do, I'm not sure how much we'll be using it.

    Anyways, so long for now.

Beware the grandma patrol Part 1
"You'll have all sorts of chances to make a happy encounter."

When I finished my fried rice and found this fortune in my cookie, my first thought was, of course, that old joke where you append "... between the sheets." or "... in bed." to the fortune. But once I'd gotten past that silly thought, I couldn't help but wonder if this would end up being yet another pointless fortune cookie fortune that has nothing to do with what happens in my life, or if some twist of fate would end up bringing some relevancy to it.

Well, the short version is: I went to Korea, my grandma died, I got engaged. (In that order.)

    Here's the long version.... )

    Long overdue
First of all, happy 4th of July to anybody who might be reading this before heading out to watch the fireworks shows wherever you are.

Second, when I say, "Long overdue," I'm not just referring to the fact that I haven't posted to my LJ in ages. It means I finally took my car into the Subaru dealership to replace the center diff (was causing the car to clunk in tight turns), replace the ignition coil and a spark plug and a spark plug wire (was causing a severe engine misfire), and get an oil change. Total damage: $2230. I think it's going to be Cup O' Noodle time for a while.

It also means that I went to the dentist and had my teeth examined for the first time in years. While my teeth had managed to avoid being reduced to little white nubs, it turns out that a filling had gone missing and, therefore, there was a hole in one of my teeth. Hopefully, taking care of that issue will mean the chronic ear infection I was suffering from will finally go away for good.

Finally, I found the time to make it out to a computer show to check out parts and prices. I now have my sights set on a 19" widescreen LCD monitor made by Acer being sold for $160. Possibly two. I also am considering replacing my ancient-ass ATI Radeon AIW video card with something of a more recent vintage. Like something that is compatible with Windows Media Center Edition 2005. We'll see, though. That $2230 put a pretty big dent in my discretionary budget.

    Who is Dennis Weaver?
Once again, over the Memorial Day weekend, I flew on JetBlue to Ontario, CA to participate in a meeting at Highland Springs Resort in Beaumont, CA. Frequent readers of this LJ will know what this means: free TV courtesy of JetBlue and DirecTV.

After checking ESPN (boxing = boring), ESPN2 (poker = maybe some other time), Food Network (random stuff I wasn't interested in watching), and BBC America (more stuff I wasn't interested in), I finally hit paydirt on GSN. (The Game Show Network, or whatever it's called these days.)

They were showing a celebrity edition of American The Weakest Link. The list of contestants included: Dennis Somebody (I don't know who he was, and I didn't catch his last name since I didn't watch it from the beginning), Erin Gray (still a hottie), Ed Begley, Jr. (still a git, and he ended up winning, too), Vicki Lawrence (still funny, though she spent more time laughing at other people's jokes than cracking her own), Davy Jones (I'm not sure but he looked shorter than ...), Raven, and Dirk Benedict (looks the same as he ever has). I felt like I'd died and gone to 80s TV Heaven.

Update: IMDB says it was Dennis Weaver. He managed to crack a few jokes, some at Anne Robinson's expense, that I laughed at. Oh, and it looks like I missed Nichelle Nichols getting voted off.

Update2: Raven is a 1/2-inch shorter than Davy Jones.

2 down, 2 (well, actually 1) to go
One thing I've taken pride in over the years is the fact that Detroit is one of the few cities in American active in all four major team sports. (Football, basketball, baseball, hockey.) I've taken a great deal less pride in the fact that, for a good period of time, none of those teams were any good. But things have been better of late. The Red Wings have become perennial contenders for the Stanley Cup. The Tigers made it back to the World Series. (And error'd their way back out again.) The Pistons showed the NBA world that you don't need a superstar to win a title. The Lions have been, well, the Lions. I mean, what can I say? :p

Anyways, after years of first-round playoff exits, the Red Wings finally got as far as the Western Conference Finals (the round just before the Stanley Cup Finals) where they got unceremoniously bounced out by the Anaheim Ducks. Damn Sebastien Giguere making our lives miserable ... again. But at least we made it that far. A good thing.

Meanwhile, the Pistons got as far as the Eastern Conference Finals (again, the round just before the NBA Finals) where they got steamrollered by the Cleveland Cavaliers. I mean, they were crushed. The scores may have been close for the first 5 games, but it was clear by the 6th game that the Pistons were running on fumes while the Cavs had the advantages of youth and a palpable hunger for the NBA title. So, on the one hand, I hope the Spurs sweep the Cavs in the Finals. (Enemy of my enemy is my friend.) But on the other hand, I like LeBron James as a basketball player. And I'd like to see him win that first championship. I think he would be a worthy champion. (As opposed to Kobe and, to a much lesser degree, Shaq.) So, while we may have lost, I feel we lost to a worthwhile opponent. So I don't begrudge them their victory.

The Tigers, who I expected to have an off year after making it to the Series last year, appear to be contenders for the title again this year due to the acquisition of Gary Sheffield from the Yankees and the resurgence of Magglio Ordonez. (As well as continued production from Carlos Guillen and the evergreen Ivan Rodriguez.) This is not to neglect the valuable contributions from Placido Polanco and Brandon Inge. And the starting pitchers. And the bullpen. Ah, heck. The whole team is doing (surprisingly to me) well. And I love them for it. Leyland has his boys competing day-in and day-out, and I love it. I don't dare hope for it, but I can see them making it back to the Series again this year. Hey, a guy can hope, can't he?

As for the Lions, well, I guess a 6-10 season might be nice. Maybe we can actually win more than 1 or 2 road games this year? I'd be seriously shocked if they managed to put together an 8-8 season. I mean heart-stoppingly, stupendously shocked. But, eh. It's the Lions. :p

    This is progress?
Months and months ago, I went into a CocoNuts to [re-]buy a copy of Alice Deejay's Who Needs Guitars Anyway?. While I was there, I happened to notice that they were selling Sony's component video cable for the PS2 for $25.

Yesterday, I went back to this same store which is now an F.Y.E. (I was grabbing a burrito for dinner from the Baja Fresh located next door), and found out they stock Sony's component video cable for the PS3 (but also backwards-compatible with the PS2) for $20.

So I guess my question is this. Did they drop the price because the component video cable was the best option (so far as video quality goes) for the PS2, but that is no longer the case with the PS3 where HDMI is now top dog? Or was it some other reason?

The really sad thing about this is that I don't know of very many PS2 games that even take advantage of the component cable. I mean, you'd get better color accuracy no matter what game you played. (Sort of like when I replaced the composite cables on my Dreamcast with s-video ones.) But the only game I know of off-hand that uses the 1080i capability of the component cables is GT4. What am I missing?
